As a restaurant in Dresden, our cuisine is rooted in Saxon tradition, combining it with Mediterranean elegance and drawing inspiration from flavors around the world. Products are primarily sourced from Saxony and the Dresden region – carefully selected from producers we have known personally for many years. Fresh, seasonal, and processed with artisanal dedication, this creates a creative product-focused cuisine that combines regionality, quality, and contemporary enjoyment.
This is how local vegetables, exquisite meat, or fish from clear waters are transformed into finely tuned dishes that surprise and make you crave more. Sometimes it’s familiar ingredients reinterpreted, sometimes Mediterranean accents that bring lightness and warmth to the plate. But it’s always about the essence of the product – authentic, precise, and full of flavor. Olaf Kranz has stood for this for three decades: as a passionate chef, with masterful craftsmanship and the ambition to offer guests a high-quality, enjoyable dining experience.
Partners
Our partners are the foundation of our cuisine. As a restaurant in Dresden, we work closely with Saxon farmers who supply us with tender pasture-raised beef and meadow veal. Regional gardeners from the Dresden area bring fresh herbs from the Elbe meadows, and our baker from Hellerau bakes bread daily according to our wishes. These close, long-standing relationships not only ensure the highest quality but also transparency – we know exactly where every ingredient comes from, how it was produced, and what story it tells.

For lunch, we serve down-to-earth cuisine of the highest quality – ideal for a lunch break or a relaxed business lunch in Dresden. In our restaurant in Dresden-Hellerau, the lunch menu changes every two weeks and is based on fresh, regional products and seasonal ideas.
Quick, uncomplicated, and at fair prices, you can enjoy artisanally cooked dishes that are satisfying yet sophisticated. Whether classically interpreted or as a creative daily special – quality, care, and good taste are always our focus at lunchtime.

What you should know: The menu can change even during an evening. Individual components or entire dishes are removed as soon as ingredients run out. Why? As a restaurant in Dresden, we deliberately do not buy large quantities, but consistently rely on daily fresh quality from the market.
This means for you: What lands on your plate is guaranteed fresh – and sometimes unique to that evening.

Our filled potato dumpling has become Schmidt’s unmistakable favorite dish and culinary trademark. Velvety soft and shimmering golden on the outside, its heart holds changing seasonal compositions: sometimes tender veal with Mediterranean accents, sometimes creative vegetable-herb arrangements. Harmonious sauces are created to match the filling – from aromatic cherry jus to other creative compositions that delight in every season.

Schmidt's Gift Voucher
Home at Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau
In 1994, we opened our first restaurant “König Albert” in Dresden. In 2002, we moved into the historic building complex of Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau – founded in 1909 by Karl Schmidt, our restaurant’s namesake. The Mediterranean loft atmosphere, the idyllic courtyard, and the quiet location made this place an ideal setting from the beginning for enjoyable, high-quality dining in Dresden.
Today, over 20 years later, we look back on continuous development and established structures. Head Chef and Managing Director Olaf Kranz has been part of the establishment from the start, and many employees have been with us for more than ten years. As a Slow Food partner, we stand for fresh, regional products, artisanal cuisine, and a regularly changing menu that consciously prioritizes quality over abundance.
We particularly value the loyalty of our guests – some have been with us since day one. We look forward to your visit to our restaurant in Dresden-Hellerau. For groups and special occasions, our restaurant is also available for parties of up to 55 people.
